Bell Curve Analysis
Compare Ratings: View Performance Distribution with Bell Curve
Keka’s enhanced Bell Curve now displays three curves for easy comparison:
Ideal Curve – Your organisation’s benchmark distribution
-
Pre-Calibration Curve – Ratings before adjustments
-
Post-Calibration Curve – Ratings after calibration edits
Hover over each segment to view:
Number of employees
Percentage in each band
How distributions shifted after calibration
The Bell Curve chart displays three curves: Ideal Curve (black) for benchmark distribution, Pre-Calibration Curve (green) showing original ratings, and Post-Calibration Curve (purple) reflecting adjusted ratings after calibration.
Comparing them helps spot rating inflation or compression—and pinpoints teams that may need attention.
Departmental Breakdown
Performance data can be analysed by department, business unit, or manager, allowing for a more granular understanding of performance trends. This segmentation enables targeted calibration efforts, ensuring more accurate evaluations across different groups.
Using the 9-Box Grid
The 9-box grid can be used when both performance and potential ratings are enabled during the review cycle. This tool categorises employees based on two dimensions: their performance and their potential, offering a visual representation of their development.
Performance and Potential Axes
The horizontal axis shows performance levels, ranging from low to high.
The vertical axis represents potential, also ranging from low to high.
Each of the nine boxes in the grid represents a unique combination of performance and potential, providing a valuable overview of employee strengths and areas for growth.
Metrics
Each box includes metrics showing the percentage and count of employees in that category, offering quantitative insights to help guide decisions regarding promotions, development, and talent management.
-
Click View Bands to open the 9-Box Bands Configuration window.
-
In this window, you can view the configured rating ranges for Performance (X-axis) and Potential (Y-axis), along with the preset band labels (such as Key Player, Future Star) and their corresponding Band Names (Band A, Band B, etc.).
Note: However, the 9-box grid can only be used when both performance and potential ratings are activated during the review cycle.
Allocating Performance Bands
To allocate or assign performance bands, follow these steps:
-
Go to the Performance module and select the Reviews section. You will be directed to Review Cycles. Go to Active/Upcoming tab.
-
Choose the required Review Group from the list, select the review cycle, and click View Progress.
-
During the Post Review process, navigate to the Review Analysis section and select View Bands.
-
A window will open displaying the rating ranges assigned to each performance band based on the established criteria.
-
Go to the Calibration section, where you can filter employees by department, business unit, or manager. Choose the relevant section and click Manage.
-
You can select multiple employees by checking the boxes next to their names. After selecting the employees, go to the Band dropdown menu and choose the appropriate performance band that aligns with the evaluation criteria for the group.
Carefully review the band assignments to ensure consistency with your assessment criteria. Once satisfied, navigate to the Calibrators tab to invite calibrators. They will receive a notification in their inbox to begin the calibration process.
Alternatively, if you're an HR Manager or Admin and wish to calibrate the ratings yourself, you can click the Calibrate option under Final Rating tab to directly assign a final rating to the employee.
-
Click Finalise Calibration to confirm the performance band assignments and move the selected employees to the Finalised stage of the review process.
Using Bell Curve and 9-box analysis helps organisations gain clear insights into performance distribution and employee potential. These tools allow for informed decision-making regarding employee development, promotions, and rewards. Regular calibration and thoughtful performance band assignments ensure fairness and consistency across the organisation.
