Overview
We’ve introduced enhancements to the Benefits module for US Payroll to improve payroll accuracy and expand supported benefit coverage.
This update introduces HSA coverage type at the employee enrollment level, adds new benefit types supported by Check, and standardizes benefit contribution configurations based on payroll and IRS best practices.
These improvements help ensure more accurate payroll calculations, reduce manual corrections, and expand the types of benefits employers can manage through the platform.
Key Enhancements
1. HSA Coverage Type at Employee Enrollment
Health Savings Account (HSA) benefits now include a Coverage Type field at the employee enrollment level.
Coverage type determines the employee’s contribution eligibility limits, which directly affect payroll calculations.
Supported options:
- Single (default)
- Family
This field is now available during:
- Admin-led benefit enrollment
- Employee self-enrollment
- Benefit reassignment
- Benefit assignment imports
If the benefit type is HSA, the coverage type becomes a mandatory field during employee enrollment.
Additional improvements include:
- Employees can select or update the coverage type during self-enrollment.
- Admins can modify the coverage type while approving enrollment requests.
- Coverage type updates are included in enrollment and amount change request notifications.
- All changes are captured in employee pay profile activity logs.
Note: HSA coverage type is captured only during employee enrollment and is not required during company benefit creation.
2. New Supported Benefit Types
To expand benefit coverage and align with Check’s supported benefit model, the following new benefit types have been introduced:
- Transit Benefits
- Parking Benefits
- Nontaxable Fringe Benefits
- Non-Qualified Deferred Compensation (NQDC)
These benefit types enable employers to offer a wider range of benefits while ensuring correct payroll treatment during payroll processing.
3. Standardized Contribution Configuration
Benefit contributions now follow standard industry configurations to ensure consistency with payroll and IRS guidelines.
Supported contribution configurations include:
- Flat Amount Contributions
- Percentage-Based Contributions
These configurations apply to the newly supported benefit types as well as existing benefits where applicable.
4. System-wide Benefit Integration
The new benefit capabilities are fully integrated across payroll and benefits workflows.
They are available in:
- Company benefit creation
- Employee benefit enrollment
- Benefit assignment imports
- Employee pay profiles
- Payroll runs
- Pay stubs
- Post-payroll reports
- Activity logs
This ensures benefits are consistently applied across the payroll lifecycle.
Impact
These enhancements help organizations:
- Ensure accurate HSA contribution calculations based on employee coverage type
- Expand the range of benefits supported in payroll
- Reduce manual payroll corrections caused by benefit misconfigurations
- Align the benefits model with Check’s payroll infrastructure
- Enable scalable expansion of benefit offerings in the future
